What is Cultural Heritage?
Cultural Heritage is an expression of the ways of living developed by a community and passed on from generation to generation, including customs, practices, places, objects, artistic expressions and values. Cultural Heritage is often expressed as either Intangible or Tangible Cultural Heritage (ICOMOS, 2002).
Types of cultural heritage
Intangible Cultural Heritage refers to the abstract and exists in the minds of people within that culture.
Tangible Cultural Heritage refers to physical artifacts produced, maintained, and transmitted intergenerationally in a society.
Two tangible aspects of Jamaican cultural heritage are the traditional clothing, such as the colorful dresses and head wraps worn by women, and the architecture of historic buildings, such as the plantation great houses and the Georgian-style buildings in Kingston. Two intangible aspects are the music, such as reggae and dancehall, and the food, such as jerk chicken and ackee and saltfish.
